Mamsa Forte and Sexual Debility

Mamsa Forte and Sexual Debility

Q: What is impotence?

A: Impotence is the loss of a man's ability to have an erect penis and to emit semen. Some men may become impotent after having diabetes for a long time because the nerves or blood vessels have become damaged. Sometimes the problem has nothing to do with diabetes and may be treated with counseling. An impotent man is powerless: the quality of lacking strength or power; being weak and feeble. It is an abnormal physical or psychological state in a male.

Q: What is sexual debility?

A: Debility is the state of being weak in health or body. It is lack or loss of strength. Sexual debility in males is the inability of the adult male to achieve erection or less commonly to ejaculate having achieved an erection.

Q: What is libido?

A: The natural desire for sexual intercourse is called libido. It is an individual's interest in having a sexual experience. Multiple factors contribute to (or reduce) the immediacy or intensity of interest. Freud used this term to refer to sexual energy – the driving force in humans according to him. Poor libido may delay orgasm.

Q: What is orgasm?

A: The psychological and physical thrill that accompanies sexual climax both in females as well as males. Many women can have a series of orgasms, one following shortly after another. Most men have only a single orgasm, accompanied by an ejaculation. Some men can experience multiple orgasms within a short interval, in which ejaculation occurs during the last orgasm. An orgasm, also known as a sexual climax, is a pleasurable psychological or emotional response to prolonged sexual stimulation. It is often accompanied by a notable physiological reaction, such as ejaculation, blushing or spasm and may be followed by aftershocks.

Q: What is Erectile Dysfunction?

A: Erection Dysfunction is also referred to as ED. It is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough to begin or complete sexual intercourse. There are various underlying causes, many of which are medically reversible.

Q: What is oligospermia?

A: Oligospermia is a fertility problem referring to low sperm count. Strictly, oligozoospermia, meaning a reduced number of sperm cells (spermatozoa) in the ejaculate (compared with azoospermia, which means no sperm in the ejaculate). More generally, a decrease in normal, motile sperm, and more or less encompassing laborious terms such as “asthenozoospermia” (weak motility) and “teratozoospermia” (abnormal sperm). The sperm count is less than 20 million per ml.

Tulex Herbal Cough Syrup and Cough

Tulex Herbal Cough Syrup and Cough

Q: What is cough?

A: Cough is the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs that clears the air passages. Cough is a common symptom of upper respiratory infection, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis or asthma. In cough, there is a sudden, often repetitive, spasmodic contraction of the thoracic cavity, resulting in violent release of air from the lungs, and usually accompanied by a distinctive sound. A cough is usually initiated to clear a buildup of phlegm in the trachea. Air may move through this passage at up to 480 km/h (300 mph).

Q: What is dry cough?

A: Dry cough is also referred to as unproductive cough. During the process of dry cough, there is no production of mucus or sputum from the respiratory tract. A typical example of dry cough is the cough produced as a side effect by the well-known group of anti-hypertensive drugs called ACE-Inhibitors. (Examples of ACE-Inhibitors are enalapril, lisinopril and ramipril.)

Q: What is productive cough?

A: Productive cough is a type of cough that expels mucus or sputum from the respiratory tract. This is commonly seen in cough along with cold and fever.

Q: What is an expectorant?

A: An expectorant is a substance that stimulates removal of mucous from the lungs. Stimulating expectorants "irritate" the bronchioles causing expulsion of material. Relaxing expectorants soothe bronchial spasm and loosen mucous secretions, helping in dry, irritating coughs. Expectorants thus expel phlegm by inducing coughing, sneezing, or spitting.

Q: What is a cough suppressant?

A: Cough suppressants are also sometimes referred to as cough suppressants. They are used to control coughing, particularly with a dry, nagging, unproductive cough.

Q: What is asthma?

A: Asthma is an illness that causes a temporary blockage of the small airways in the lungs. When someone is having an "asthma attack," the smooth muscles around the airways tighten, causing the airways to become inflamed, narrow, and produce excess mucus. This makes it difficult for air to pass in and out of the lungs. In susceptible individuals this inflammation causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and cough particularly at night and/or in the early morning.

Insuherb and Diabetes / Pre-Diabetes

Insuherb and Diabetes / Pre-Diabetes

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism. In diabetes, the body does not properly control the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. As a result, the level of sugar in the blood is too high.

This disease occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it properly. Insulin is a hormone that is necessary to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy.

In diabetes, sugar and starch are not properly used by our bodies due to inadequate insulin production (type 1) or decreased sensitivity to insulin (type 2).

In other words, the two types of diabetes are referred to as insulin-dependent (type I) and non-insulin dependent (type II).

Type I diabetes results from a lack of adequate insulin secretion by the pancreas.

Type II diabetes (also known as adult-onset diabetes) is characterized by an insensitivity of the tissues of the body to insulin secreted by the pancreas (insulin resistance).

Diabetes is a lifelong disease. Symptoms include hunger, thirst, excessive urination, dehydration and weight loss.

The new definition of diabetes includes symptoms of diabetes, along with any one of the following three criteria:
1. A random plasma sugar level greater than 11 mmol/l (millimoles per litre)
2. A fasting plasma sugar level greater than or equal to 7mmol/l (or 6.1mmol/l in whole blood)
3. A plasma sugar level greater than 11 mmol/l two hours after drinking 75 grams of glucose dissolved in water in an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)

Mmol/l stands for millimoles per litre. This way of measuring blood glucose concentrations is used almost all over the world, except in America.

Over there, most glucose measurements are in mg/dl, or milligrams per decilitre. To translate mmol/l into mg/dl, multiply your figure in mmol/l by 18. So if you're travelling in the US and need to speak to a doctor, make sure that one of you has a calculator to hand!
Frequently asked questions on pre-diabetics

Q: What is pre-diabetes and how is it different from diabetes?

A: Pre-diabetes is the state that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. About 11 percent of people with pre-diabetes in the Diabetes Prevention Program standard or control group developed type 2 diabetes each year during the average 3 years of follow-up. Other studies show that most people with pre-diabetes develop type 2 diabetes in 10 years

Q: Is pre-diabetes the same as Impaired Glucose Tolerance or Impaired Fasting Glucose?

A: Yes. Doctors sometimes refer to this state of elevated blood glucose levels as Impaired Glucose Tolerance or Impaired Fasting Glucose (IGT/IFG), depending on which test was used to detect it.

Q: Why do we need to give it a new name? Has the condition changed?

A: The condition has not changed, but what we know about it has. We are giving IGT/IFG a new name for several reasons. Pre-diabetes is a clearer way of explaining what it means to have higher than normal blood glucose levels. It means you are likely to develop diabetes and may already be experiencing the adverse health effects of this serious condition. People with pre-diabetes are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease. People with pre-diabetes have a 1.5-fold risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people with normal blood glucose. People with diabetes have a 2- to 4-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease. We now know that people with pre-diabetes can delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes

Q:How do I know if I have pre-diabetes?

A:Doctors can use either the fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) or the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to detect pre-diabetes. Both require a person to fast overnight. In the FPG test, a person's blood glucose is measured first thing in the morning before eating. In the OGTT, a person's blood glucose is tested after fasting and again 2 hours after drinking a glucose-rich drink

Q:How does the FPG test define diabetes and pre-diabetes?

A:Normal fasting blood glucose is below 110 mg/dl. A person with pre-diabetes has a fasting blood glucose level between 110 and 125 mg/dl. If the blood glucose level rises to 126 mg/dl or above, a person has diabetes

Q:How does the OGTT define diabetes and pre-diabetes?

A:In the OGTT, a person's blood glucose is measured after a fast and 2 hours after drinking a glucose-rich beverage.
Normal blood glucose is below 140 mg/dl 2 hours after the drink.
In pre-diabetes, the 2-hour blood glucose is 140 to 199 mg/dl.
If the 2-hour blood glucose rises to 200 mg/dl or above, a person has diabetes.

Q:Which test is better?

A:According to the expert panel, either test is appropriate to identify pre- diabetes.

Q:Why do I need to know if I have pre-diabetes?

A:If you have pre-diabetes, you can and should do something about it. Studies have shown that people with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes by up to 58 percent through changes to their lifestyle that include modest weight loss and regular exercise. The expert panel recommends that people with pre-diabetes reduce their weight by 5-10 percent and participate in some type of modest physical activity for 30 minutes daily. For some people with pre-diabetes, intervening early can actually turn back the clock and return elevated blood glucose levels to the normal range.

Q:What is the treatment for pre-diabetes?

A:Treatment consists of losing a modest amount of weight (5-10 7percent of total body weight) through diet and moderate exercise, such as walking, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Don't worry if you can't get to your ideal body weight. A loss of just 10 to 15 pounds can make a huge difference. If you have pre-diabetes, you are at a 50 percent increased risk for heart disease or stroke, so your doctor may wish to treat or counsel you about cardiovascular risk factors, such as tobacco use, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Q:Who should get tested for pre-diabetes?

A:If you are overweight and age 45 or older, you should be tested for pre-diabetes during your next routine medical office visit. If your weight is normal and you're over age 45, you should ask your doctor during a routine office visit if testing is appropriate. For adults younger than 45 and overweight, your doctor may recommend testing if you have any other risk factors for diabetes or pre-diabetes. These include; high blood pressure; low HDL cholesterol and high triglycerides; a family history of diabetes; a history of gestational diabetes or giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds; or belonging to an ethnic or minority group at high risk for diabetes.

Q:How often should I be tested?
A:If your blood glucose levels are in the normal range, it is reasonable to be retested every 3 years. If you have pre-diabetes, you should be tested for type 2 diabetes every 1-2 years after your diagnosis

Q:Could I have pre-diabetes and not know it?

A:Absolutely. People with pre-diabetes don't often have symptoms. In fact, millions of people have diabetes and don't know it because symptoms develop so gradually, people often don't recognize them. Some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms of diabetes include are: unusual thirst; a frequent desire to urinate; blurred vision; or and a feeling of being tired most of the time for no apparent reason.

Q:Should children be screened for pre-diabetes?

A:We are not recommending screening children for pre-diabetes because we don't have enough evidence that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed in children at high risk for the disease. However, a study published in the March 14, 2002, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine found 25 percent of very obese children and 21 percent of very obese adolescents had pre-diabetes. If future studies show that early intervention also works for children, a recommendation could be forthcoming.

Cerrata Plus and Musculoskeletal Inflammatory Disease

Cerrata Plus and Musculoskeletal Inflammatory Disease

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is a protective reaction to injury, disease, or irritation of the tissues.
Inflammation is the first response of the immune system to infection or irritation and may be referred to as the innate cascade.

Inflammation is characterized by the following quintet: redness (rubor), heat (calor), swelling (tumor), pain (dolor) and dysfunction, i.e. loss of mobility of the organs involved (functio laesa).

What is arthritis?

Arthritis means inflammation of a joint usually accompanied by pain, swelling, and sometimes change in structure. There are more than 100 kinds of arthritis. The breakdown of the cartilage lining the bones in joints, usually weight-bearing joints (such as the knee); causes stiffness and pain (also called osteo-arthritis)

What is rheumatoid arthritis?

A chronic systemic disease that causes inflammatory changes in the synovium, or joint lining, that result in pain, stiffness, swelling, and ultimately loss of function and deformities of the affected joints due to destruction of the cartilage and adjacent bone. The disease can also affect other parts of the body. In the past it was also called chronic polyarthritis. It is more common in women than men, and at least 70% of patients show a positive blood test for rheumatoid factor.

The allopathic drugs commonly used for these conditions are called as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, commonly called as NSAID’s.

The oldest of the NSAID’S is aspirin. The other commonly used ones are ibuprofen, naproxen and piroxicam. All these drugs are known to cause gastric irritation – like abdominal distress and in severe cases, even gastric ulceration and bleeding.

The newer ones introduced in the last decade, the coxibs (like celecoxib, rofecoxib and valdecoxib) although are not known to be safer on the stomach, cause other problems related to the heart. Rofecoxib and valdecoxib have been banned in India by DCI.

In all these chronic conditions, doctors are looking at ayurvedic drugs. Cerrata would, therefore, be an additional drug in the doctors armamentarium.

Sepna Forte and Obesity

What is obesity?

Obesity is the condition of being extremely overweight. In obesity excess of fat has accumulated in the body. It is usually considered to be 20 percent above the recommended weight for height and age.

A person is considered obese if he or she has a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater. BMI is used to gauge whether or not a person is overweight.

BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight (in kilograms) by his or her height (in meters, squared).

Causes of Obesity:

The causes are endless The causes for OBESITY to date have not been totally understood. However, it is a known fact that there are endless factors which cause this serious disease, some which appear to be very simple and others very complicated.
To mention the most important causes, there are the following:
· Genetics
· Metabolics
· Psychological
· Sociocultural
· Sedentary lifestyle
· Neuroendocrines
· Medicamental
· High caloric nutrition
· Multiple factors

GENETICS

The genes involved in OBESITY may be considered as predisposed and one or several of them may be acting in conjunction

METABOLIC

Some people handle the use of calories better in order to keep up the body temperature and to carry out the metabolic processes.

PSYCHOLOGICAL

Recent discoveries have transformed the theory that psychological causes can increase obesity and now consider the psychological changes in obesity as the consequence, not as the cause.

SOCIOCULTURAL

Indubitably all our surroundings greatly influence obesity. All social environment gathers around food and drink.
Food itself has become a "prize" to the behavior.
Food has become the "ideal closure" to a successful business transaction.
All religions have a background of the type of food that should be consumed (fasting, kosher, liquids with a full moon, etc).
And so could we continue with several examples

SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE

Liv-L Forte Capsules / Liv-L Syrup in Jaundice

Jaundice and Liv-L Forte and Liv-L Syrup

What is jaundice?

Jaundice is the yellowing of the skin and eyes, the whites of the eyes become yellow, urine darkens, and the color of stool becomes lighter than normal. Jaundice occurs when the liver and/ or the gall bladder is not working properly or when a bile duct is blocked. It is caused by too much bilirubin (build up of bile waste products) in the blood.

Bilirubin is yellow in color, therefore, an animal with jaundice will have yellow gums, skin (often seen on the inside flap of the ear), and a yellowish cast to the 'whites' of the eyes.

A somewhat common condition in newborn babies, it is marked by a yellowing of the skin and caused by the immature liver's inability to process excess red blood cells. Treatment for mild cases will include allowing your baby to spend time in sunlight, though in more severe cases, the baby will be admitted to the hospital and placed under lights that synthesize the sun's rays (minus harmful UV radiation).

Jaundice is associated with liver damage.

Jaundice is a symptom of many disorders, which can include viral hepatitis, alcoholism, poisoning, and abnormal breakdown of red blood cells or gallbladder disease. This symptom requires immediate medical attention.

Jaundice, technically is known as icterus.

What is hepatitis?

It is a Latin word meaning inflamed liver. Hepatitis is literally, inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis caused by a virus is known as viral hepatitis. Other causes of hepatitis include toxic chemicals and alcohol abuse. Symptoms of hepatitis include an enlarged liver, fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and dark urine.

Bacterial or viral infection, parasitic infestation, alcohol, drugs, toxins, or transfusion of incompatible blood may cause hepatitis. Although many cases of hepatitis are not a serious health threat, the disease can become chronic and sometimes lead to liver failure and death.

Hepatitis has many forms, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Hepatitis A comes from consuming contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A doesn't cause chronic liver disease and can be prevented with vaccinations. Hepatitis A was formerly called infectious hepatitis

Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus — a virus transmitted by exposure to the blood and body fluids of an infected person. Hepatitis B can be prevented with vaccinations

Hepatitis C is caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Hepatitis C virus is carried in the blood of people infected with the virus. It is primarily spread through contact with infected blood. It can occasionally be spread other ways. The virus is transmitted by exposure to the blood and body fluids of an infected person. No vaccine is available to prevent hepatitis C.

R.C. Plus and Menstrual Cycle: Patient Information

R.C.Plus and Menstrual Cycle: Patient Information

R.C. Plus, as the name it self suggests is for regularization of menstrual cycle.

What is the Menstrual Cycle:

It is defined as the monthly cycle of hormonal changes from the beginning of one menstrual period to the beginning of the next. The average cycle is 28 days, with ovulation usually occurring at the midpoint (around the 14th day).

It is a recurring cycle that occurs monthly in women as the endometrium (lining of the uterus) thickens and prepares for pregnancy.

If the egg released by one of the ovaries at ovulation (which occurs about midway through the cycle) is fertilized as it travels from the fallopian tube to the uterus, pregnancy occurs.

If the egg is not fertilized, menstruation occurs: the blood-rich endometrium is shed, and the next month's cycle begins again

What is estrogen?

Estrogen is the female sex hormone produced by the ovaries, responsible for the development of female sex characteristics. Estrogen is largely responsible for stimulating the uterine lining to thicken during the first half of the menstrual cycle in preparation for ovulation and possible pregnancy.

Estrogen is believed to play a major role in maintaining the strength and tone of the urethra and the pelvic floor.

Phyto-estrogens are estrogens derived from plants an example of which is gajar seeds.

What is dysmenorrhoea?

Dysmenorrhoea is the medical term for severe period pain or menstrual cramps that make normal everyday activities very difficult. Dysmenorrhoea cramps or painful menstruation, involves menstrual periods that are accompanied by either sharp, intermittent pain or dull, aching pain, usually in the pelvis or lower abdomen

What is an emmenogogue?

An emmenogogue is an agent taken internally to promote menstrual flow. Emmenogogues promotes menstruation; many are used as tonics for the female reproductive system. In high quantities they induce abortion, have strong effects on other systems and may be dangerous. An emmenogogue should be avoided during pregnancy.

What is amenorrhea?

Amenorrhea is absence or abnormal stoppage of menstrual cycle. Amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation. The absence or abnormal cessation of menstruation can be due to a number of factors including dietary, emotional, hormonal and exercise

R.C Plus Capsules

Gajar seeds (Daucus carota):

It is a phyto-estrogen. In ayurveda, it is used to clear the uterus, regulate menstrual cycle, ease menstrual pain and relieve dysmenorrhoea. It sloughs off the uterine membrane, so is useful in regulating the menstrual cycle. Gajar seeds are also useful in relieving Pre- Menstrual Syndrome. It also helps to drain toxins because it has a gentle diuretic action.

Papaya seeds (Carica papaya):

It has a powerful emmenogogue action. It relieves colic during menstrual cycle, thus combating painful menstruation. As it imitates estrogen, it can help with regulating the menstrual cycle

Kanya lauhadi vati:

It is useful in irregular menses, dysmenorrhoea and amenorrhea. It contains aloe, kasis, dalchini, elachi, sunthi and gulkand.

Raja pravartini vati:

Of the other disorders of the female genitalia, the displacement of the uterus or the womb is probably the most disturbing. Prolapse of the uterus is one of the twenty Yoni vyapagatas described by Charaka, Sushruta, and Vagabhatta. Raja Pravartani Vati is useful in such conditions. Ashpi - Information for patients

Ashpi Tablets and Syrup – Patient Information

What is dementia?

Dementia is the loss of intellectual functions (such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning) of sufficient severity to interfere with a person’s daily functioning. Dementia is not a disease itself but rather a group of symptoms that may accompany certain diseases or conditions. Symptoms may also include changes in personality, mood, and behavior. Dementia is irreversible when caused by disease or injury but may be reversible when caused by drugs, alcohol, hormone or vitamin imbalances, or depression.

Then what is amnesia?

Amnesia is the severe loss of memory and inability to learn.

The causes of amnesia are organic or functional.

Organic causes include damage to the brain, through trauma or disease, or use of certain (generally sedative) drugs.

Functional causes are psychological factors, such as defense mechanisms. Hysterical post-traumatic amnesia is an example of this.

What is selective amnesia?

Amnesia about particular events that is very convenient for the person who cannot remember; "why do politicians always develop selective amnesia when questioned about their transgressions?"

What is Ashpi?

It is combination of three time-tested herbs. Each tablet of Ashpi or each 5 ml of Ashpi syrup contains:

· Shankhapushpi (1000 mg)
· Brahmi (750 mg)
· Gulab (250 mg
)

Uses:

Ashpi strengthens memory and promotes intellectual functions. It is also useful in mental stress and fatigue, and impaired reasoning ability. It is also a natural anxiolytic and improves sleep disorders. It helps patients with incontinence where dementia is the root cause. Many physicians have used Ashpi successfully to give relief from migraine, and to delay the interval between migraine attacks. Paediatricians have found it useful in bedwetting in children. When hypertension is because of anxiety physicians have found Ashpi an useful and effective alternative to benzodiazepines (like diazepam, alprazolam, clonazepam and lorazepam).

Description of the ingredients in Ashpi

Shankhapushpi –(Evolvolus alsinoides, Convolvolus pluricalis)

Shankhapushpi is quoted in the ancient scriptures to be the single greatest herb for enhancing all three aspects of mind power – learning, memory, and recall.
It is also praised as the best herb for beauty, stating that it achieves the goal of beauty, which is auspiciousness in all parts of the body. It also helps to nourish all layers of the skin. It enhances all three pillars of Ayurvedic beauty, known as outer beauty, inner beauty, and lasting beauty.
Shankhapushpi is very beneficial for the nervous system, enhancing the quality of nerve tissues.

Shankhapushpi treats sleep disorders by alleviating stress and anxiety,

Shankhapushpi is quoted in Charaka to be the single greatest herb for enhancing all three aspects of mind power – learning, memory, and recall. It helps the quality of sleep by improving mind-body coordination. Shankhapushpi is very beneficial for the nervous system, enhancing the quality of bone marrow and nerve tissue.

Brahmi (Centella asiatica):

The effects of Brahmi can be of benefit to anyone wishing to stimulate their powers of recall and concentration. Although Brahmi has shown to be helpful in treating ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), age-related mental deterioration and concentration difficulties due to stress, it may be incredibly beneficial where there is no health condition, but only the desire to improve cognitive function. Brahmi improved the initial acquisition of learned information as well as retention ability.

Brahmi is as eminently suited to a healthy, young student looking to maximize their ability to focus and study, as to an elderly person hoping to regain their memory. It enables people to optimize their intellectual potential and mental vitality for the betterment of both personal and professional pursuits. Aside from increasing intellectual and cognitive function, Brahmi induces a sense of calm and peace in its users. It is unique in its ability to invigorate mental processes whilst reducing the effects of stress and nervous anxiety. This makes Brahmi extremely applicable in highly stressful work or study environments where clarity of thought is as important as being able to work under pressure.

As a nervine tonic, Brahmi has been used to help those affected by stroke, nervous breakdown or exhaustion and Attention Deficit Disorder. It may also be of value in assisting those with epilepsy.

Gulab (Rosa indica):

Gulab has a calming effect on the mind. It is very soothing for the nerves and has an anti-depressant effect. It can calm anger. In addition gulab improves mental alertness, brain function and learning ability. Further, gulab increases energy and facilitates elimination of waste from the brain.

Reliance, Tridoshas and Ayurveda

Reliance, Tridoshas and Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the Vedic system of health care that developed in India over 5000 years ago. A gift of the Gods, it was codified by the sage-physician Charaka and the sage-surgeon Shushruta.

Ayurveda is health and not disease specific.

Ayurveda takes into account the patient's entire personality - body, mind and spirit!

The word, Ayurveda, is derived from its ancient Sanskrit roots - ‘ayush' (life) and ‘veda' (knowledge from the divine books)

The main source of knowledge in Ayurveda, remain the Vedas, the divine books of knowledge. Of the few treatises on Ayurveda that have survived from around the same time, the most famous are Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita, which concentrate on internal medicine and surgery respectively.

"Tridoshas" are bioenergetic forces that govern and determine our health or physical condition.

Ayurveda, thus, is a holistic system of health care that teaches us to balance these bioenergetic forces in order to achieve optimum health and well being.

The Tridoshas

The Tridoshas (tri meaning three and doshas being the basic physical energies) are the primary and essential factors of the human body that govern our entire physical structure and function.

Derived from the Panchmahabhutas, each dosha is a combination of any two of the five bhutas with the predominance of one.

Called Vata, Pitta and Kapha in Sanskrit, these three are responsible for all the physiological and psychological processes within the body and mind – dynamic forces that determine growth and decay.

Every physical characteristic, mental capacity and the emotional tendency of a human being can therefore be explained in terms of the tridoshas.

Most of the physical phenomena ascribed to the nervous system by modern physiology for example, can be identified with Vata.

The entire chemical process operating in the human body can be attributed to Pitta, including enzymes, hormones and the complete nutritional system.
And the activities of the skeletal and the anabolic system, actually the entire physical volume of an organism, can be considered as Kapha.

When the doshas are in balance i.e. in a state of equilibrium, we remain healthy. As Charaka, the great ayurvedic sage, explained: "Vata, pitta and kapha maintain the integrity of the living human organism in their normal state and combine so as to make the man a complete being with his indriyas (sense organs) possessed of strength, good complexion and assured of longevity."

It is only when that there is imbalance within the three that disease is caused.
And since it is the strongest dosha in the constitution that usually has the greatest tendency to increase, one is most susceptible to illnesses associated with an increase of the same.

It is important to realize that these three are forces and not substances.
Kapha is not mucus; it is the force that causes mucus to arise.

Similarly pitta is not bile; but that which causes bile to be produced.
And they are called doshas – literally meaning `faults’ - as they indicate the fault lines along which the system can become imbalanced.

It is equally important to understand that the three doshas within any person keep changing constantly, due to the doshic qualities of specific lifestyle and environment, such as time and season. And that these three are not separate energies but different aspects of the same energy, present together in an infinite variety of combinations, wherein their qualities overlap and interrelate.
Ayurveda however considers only three types of constitution – in monotypes just one dosha predominates, in duo types two have near similar strength, and in the very rarely found third type all three are equally powerful
